Until now, you may have thought that mead vinegar (honey vinegar) was only good for dressing salads.

But connoisseurs the world over use mead vinegar in many other ways, both medicinal and gastronomic.

In fact, many even use it as the central ingredient in what is known as a honey vinegar detox cure.

The idea behind this detoxification is that unfiltered honey vinegar still contains "the mother".

The mother contains good bacteria for the intestine, vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

It is normal for honey vinegar containing the mother to be cloudy or opaque.

The use of honey vinegar for detoxification, diet and other benefits dates back thousands of years.

Some even claim that the father of medicine, Hippocrates, promoted its health qualities as early as 400 BC.

More recently, some manufacturers of premium apple vinegar have been touting its health benefits since 1912.

What are the benefits of detoxifying with honey vinegar (mead)?

The body is able to detoxify itself.

There isn't much scientific research to support the argument that detox diets eliminate toxins from the body.

Many people use a detox diet to start changing their diet, eliminating processed foods and introducing healthier whole foods.

The supposed benefits of detoxing with honey vinegar are both internal and external.

They include:

- give the body a good dose of enzymes
- increase potassium intake
- support a healthy immune system
- help control weight
- Promotes a balanced pH in the body
- aids good digestion
- added good bacteria for the intestine and immune function
- helps to eliminate toxins from the body.
- soothe the skin and help it stay healthy
- cures acne when applied externally.

You may have heard that honey vinegar helps to reduce appetite and even burn fat.

There is also evidence to suggest that adding honey vinegar to your daily routine can help combat type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

How to detox with honey vinegar?

The basic recipe is as follows:

- 1 to 2 tablespoons raw, unfiltered honey vinegar
- 250 ml quality spring water or purified or distilled water

There are many variations of this basic drink.
Some include the addition of lemon juice.
Others add a pinch of cayenne pepper.

It is delicious served as a non-alcoholic mocktail. It does double duty as a cure and as an eating pleasure!

With a honey vinegar detox, you consume this type of drink regularly over a set period - from several days to a month or more.

Many people choose to consume it three times a day: on waking, mid-morning and again mid-afternoon.

Is there any research to support detoxification with apple cider vinegar?

There is no formal research specifically on apple cider vinegar as part of a detoxification regime.

Most of the information you will find online is purely anecdotal.

Read them with caution.

But this does not mean that the health properties of mead vinegar have not been examined.

For example, there is a growing body of research on apple cider vinegar and its impact on type 2 diabetes.

In a small study hereConsumption of this ingredient reduced both glycaemia and insulin levels in 12 participants with diabetes.

In addition, the participants' feeling of satiety after eating bread increased.

As far as weight loss is concerned, some studies support the powers of honey or apple cider vinegar.

One study found that obese rats that drank apple cider vinegar daily lost more body weight and fat mass than rats in the control group.

The waist circumference and triglyceride levels of the rats in the apple cider vinegar groups were also significantly reduced.

In yet another study, apple cider vinegar reduced LDL, triglyceride and cholesterol levels in 19 people suffering from hyperlipidaemia, or high blood lipid levels.

The results suggest that regular consumption of quality vinegar and mead may be a good way of preventing atherosclerosis for people at high risk of developing this complication and other heart problems.

However, these studies have been conducted on animals or on very small samples of people.

Larger-scale studies on humans are still needed.

But what really stands out is the amount of evidence we have from ancient literature.

Honey vinegar was used in medicine as a universal panacea.

What you need to know before trying this detox

Before you start drinking large quantities of apple cider vinegar, make sure it is diluted with water.

Ideally, 2 tablespoons per meal at lunchtime and in the evening are a good benchmark for daily consumption.

Honey vinegar in its pure form is not too acidic and is slightly sweet, with a range of flavours depending on how it is flavoured.

It can't erode tooth enamel or even burn your mouth and throat because it's a sweet, syrupy vinegar.

But don't abuse it!

You can even drink it through a straw.

Eat small amounts every day. Excess is always bad for everyone.

Honey vinegar may also interact with various medications or supplements.

In particular, it can contribute to low potassium levels if you are taking diuretics or insulin.

If you are taking diuretics or insulin, talk to your doctor before starting to drink mead vinegar regularly or trying the detox cure.

And to summarise

While there's no in-depth research to suggest that honey vinegar is a miracle health remedy, the testimonials and reviews you'll find online can be convincing.

Trying a honey vinegar detox is probably safe for most people.

Ultimately, perhaps the best way to 'detox' your body is to stop eating sugars and processed foods and follow a healthy diet rich in whole foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.

If you are still interested in mead vinegar, it is advisable to consult your doctor before adding this ingredient to your diet.

This is especially true if you are taking medication or dietary supplements.
